Here on the Mastertronic Collectors Archive, we have a page where we promote all the various fan remakes of some of our favourite Mastertronic games. One of the more prolific authors, László Rajcsányi, has been working to port many of his favourite Commodore 16 games across to the Gameboy and Gameboy Color and one such release was David Jones’s Finders Keepers.
Why Finders Keepers?
Programmer László Rajcsányi had been a huge fan of the Commodore 16 but wanted to find a way to take the games he loved from the classic Commodore system with him on the go. “I had a dream when I got my first Gameboy handheld console: I wanted to play the Commodore 16/+4 games from my childhood in a portable way that I could take with me on trips. We had to wait a long time, and in the end, it wasn’t because someone made an emulator, but because I rewrote the games myself.” The result was his website at https://wls.hu/ where he released homebrew conversions of well over 100 games, including many originally released by Mastertronic for both the Gameboy and Gameboy Color.
One such release was Finders Keepers, originally developed by David Jones and converted to the Commodore 16 by Adrian Sheppard. Seeking permission from David Jones prior to releasing his conversion (as others have done with their ports) both were released as free downloads on the site.
Going Physical
But now, László Rajcsányi has taken 16 of the best of his conversions for the original Gameboy and collected them in a limited edition physical release as the Commodore 16+4 Pack. Available as a cartridge only for $29.99 or a special edition with box and printed manual for $59.99 it’s being produced as a non-profit release due to the nature of the games included in the pack.
Each of the games have built in cheats hidden away to make them easier and have been tweaked to work within the hardware limitations of the Gameboy. Enhanced Gameboy Color versions are available to download on the site, as are the games featured on the cartridge.
